Your day and time of birth in Fiber

These hangings are constructed of 100% cotton fabrics. We use decorative threads of various kinds of fibers, to sew the star and planet configurations that were visible in the sky at the moment of a chosen birth date. Also sewn on the piece (if desired) is the personal astrology that was above the horizon at this same time.  To finish, we machine quilt the likeness of the person whose piece we are making.  Or we can quilt an image of any theme you choose.

Our first example is for a person born May 30, at 12 pm in Puerto Rico.  The sewn arc is the ecliptic, the path the planets seem to trek across our sky.  The Placidius House System is used for the Astrological calculations.

The picture above shows the major stars and planets that are above the horizon at the moment of birth.  For example, if you were born during the night hours, the sun would be below the horizon and not visible.

Lines are sewn between the astrological constellation stars (on the ecliptic) so the observer can more easily identify these constellations in the actual sky.  Then Astrological signs are placed next to the constellations as well as any planets you may have in these constellations.  We sew lines between the stars comprising the Big and Little Dippers, (Polaris {the Pole Star} is part of the Little Dipper handle) for further orientation purposes.  The next picture shows the position of the Sun, Mercury, and Venus on the ecliptic.  The constellation of Gemini and Cancer are visible.

When all the major stars, planets, astrological signs, astrological constellations are complete, the visible Milky Way is sewn with an outline of decorative thread.  A wash of phosphorescent paint is applied to further delineate the Milky Way and each star is also dotted with phosphorescent paint. This gives a softly glowing birth sky on your wall after dark.

When the front is complete, we use 100% cotton batting and backing fabric, with the machine quilting on the back in contrasting silk thread.  The quilting is quilted through the whole piece using a thread color that does not show on the front side unless very closely examined.  For portrait quilting, you supply us with a good quality head/face photo (can be emailed) and we do the rest.

We will work with you if you desire a different theme for your quilting.  For instance, a piece of sculpture by the owner/Artist was the finishing quilting pattern on the very first Birth Sky we created.

This picture is the back of our first example.  Look carefully to see a sewn image of the person whose tapestry this is.

Finally the hanging is fitted with a sleeve for the hand dyed dowel to pass through and a ribbon is securely fixed to the dowel for hanging upon your wall.   Next comes the  legend consisting of date produced, name of person, occasion for tapestry (i.e., Christmas, Birthday, special remembrance) and/or special requests.
