This
piece is the result of 30 years of variously phased accidental happenings in my life. Starting with a vision in my youth full days,
with an "I can draw this" ringing in my thoughts. Years passed, full
with the things of life; child bearing, working to make a living, crafting to
make a living. Although my surface consciousness was preoccupied with the
things of everyday survival, the deep memory of my vision was still
alive.
In 1987 the wish to prepare a wedding gift became real and quite
by accident, a magazine lay about containing a wedding quilt pattern.
When the assembly of all necessary ingredients was accomplished, the thought came to me of how boring it would be to just
copy the magazine pattern. So I decided to draw my own.
With
the center section well on it's way to being finished, I hung it up to see how all was
progressing. To my absolute utter astonishment, I found myself looking at
my inner vision of so many years ago.
Construction took place during the LA riots of 1992. Working in the upper right quadrant, I was struck by the
notion that the lines of the quilt were very much like the divergence and convergence of the streets, and peoples of the City of Los Angeles. To me, this piece
reflects the positive, beautiful energies
that make up this truly wonder full, scary, teeming, exciting center of gravity
called Los Angeles.
